MSense hosts EyeCon VR/AR Lab Workshop II: Blender, EEG and Unity for VR research

October 2, 2026

The second on-site workshop of the Erasmus+ project EyeCon VR/AR Lab took place at LMU Munich from 28 September to 2 October 2026, hosted by the MSense Lab at the Department of Psychology. Colleagues from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University and Çanakkale Teknopark came to Munich for a week that moved from creating virtual environments, through analysing EEG data, to developing eye-tracking experiments in VR.

Blender. Prof. Dr. Zhuanghua Shi opened with two hands-on sessions on 3D content creation. The first built an object by hand, from interface and shortcuts to proportional editing, materials and precise dimensions in metres. The second connected an AI coding agent to Blender and used geometry nodes to generate a procedural shopping-mall environment that can be exported for VR, with a frank look at where such agents fall short.

EEG analysis. Dr. Artyom Zinchenko took the group through Fourier-based spectral analysis in EEGLAB and MATLAB, working on eyes-open and eyes-closed resting recordings. Slides, analysis code and a practice dataset are available so participants can repeat the analysis at home.

Unity. On 30 September Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erwan David returned for two sessions on developing VR experiments in Unity, covering VR hardware, participant comfort and eye-tracking protocols before hands-on work with the tutorials. Completed Unity reference projects let participants check their own implementations.

Lab practice. Each afternoon Chunyu Qu ran lab sessions in the MSense VR lab around NaviAd-VR, the project’s eye-tracking navigation study. Participants learned the background on egocentric and allocentric navigation, then worked with the VR maze and the eye-tracking setup, linking the week’s environment-building and experiment-development topics to a live research application.

A certification event on 30 September, cultural exchange in Munich and a closing Q&A on 2 October rounded off the programme.
